Growth Mindset is an idea developed by Carol Dweck, Ph.D. and Stanford University psychologist, after decades of research on achievement and motivation. In simple terms it is this: your beliefs about ability and effort can have an enormous effect on your motivation and your achievement. If you believe that you are born with all the intelligence and talents you will ever acquire, and that it is not possible to change these traits, you have a Fixed Mindset. If you believe that the intelligence and talents you are born with can be developed and improved through practice, effort, and overcoming challenges, you have a Growth Mindset. Dweck's research reveals the pitfalls well-meaning parents, teachers, coaches, and employers have fallen into, based on their Fixed Mindset ideas, that actually undermine the achievement, motivation, and self-esteem of the people they are trying to help.
